In The Zone - Episode 6 - End of Season Review

'In The Zone' is the regular magazine show broadcast across the galaxy on the subspace wavelength on 92.2SUS and can be picked up on any SUB radio system, streamed via smartterminals, subdermal receivers and direct brain implants.
Hosted by Jim Wiezbowski, long standing DSPN sports anchor and regular co-host Mike Spunkmeyer they discuss all the matches, news and rumours of the recent E/WSAPD action.
Joined by adventurous Sphyr roving reporter An'aka Rez'nik who sometimes gets in a little over her hammerhead and joined by weekly special guests, 'In The Zone' is the last word in the league action.

JW: Well folks the season is nearly over and it’s been a roller coasting, rip roaring and highly entertaining Spiral Arm Premier Divisions.  I’m Jim Wiezbowski, I’m joined by Mike Spunkmeyer and this, is In The Zone’s special end of season review.

Don’t miss your chance to win tickets to the Dean Cain Memorial Trophy by logging onto InfoNet and using the #deancain.  If you can’t make the stadium then watch it on Rush of the Day, live!

MS: What a season Jim!

JW: What a season Mike, what about the end of the Western Spiral Arm.  The Turions were a shell in to make the final but they were upturned at the final hurdle.

MS: If you ask me the Thunder Brokkrs tactics for the last game borered on unsportsdwarf, they just blocked the Atletico, they had no interested in the ball.  I wonder if some money changed hands…

JW: Whoa there Mike, we’ve got no proof of that.

MS: No I know, I’m just saying, the Thunder Brokkrs do have a nice new tour ship for next season….

JW: They sure do!  But they’ll be flying around in the Eastern Division as they, along with the Endorian Forest United go down.

MS: I feel sorry for Clan Stormfang, their entire season looked unstoppable and they miss out on Strike difference, only 4 points too.  It’s tough to take and those Veer’Myn will be hurting I can tell you.

JW: You missed out on the ’76 Dean Cain Memorial Trophy with the Tronkers in a similar situation.

MS: That’s right Jim, and it was a hard, hard slog the next season to put that effort back in again.  In pre-season you were just wiped out.  But that’s the difference between a good and a great team. A great team bounces back.

JW: And you got your hands on the trophy next year?

MS: Damn right we did Jim.

JW: What about the overall league performance.  There’s a clear split between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ teams.  The three bottom teams only amassed one win each and the Endorians had nearly as many Strikes against then as the Atletico Tronkers had scored in their favour.  With those teams switching over to the opposite league, will they fair better?

MS: Hard to say Jim, we know we’ve got some new teams coming in next season and that’s only going to make the mix even more unpredicatable.  We do know they didn’t compete well but when you consider Clan RapdiClaw didn’t win a single game while their sister team Clan Stormfang came second in their league shows that it’s not necessarily about the race of the team, sometimes it’s the luck of the draw.

JW: The roll of the dice even Mike?

MS: That’s another way of putting it Jim.  But this isn’t a board game, this is Dreadball and you don’t get no rerolls.

JW: I hear you Mike.  Let’s look at the Eastern Division, we mentioned Rapidclaw going down, looks like another Orx team being relegated too and a dwarven team. That means both Orx and Dwarven teams switch places.

MS: Be interesting to see if they keep their poor records in the new leagues.  But how about the Mega City Eagles, they killed the league with a 4 point clearance.

JW: The other teams must have been Dredding them….(chuckled)

MS: Right there Jim.

JW: So, who’s your players of the season?

MS: Well Jim, I think for the Western League it has to be Steve ‘Dreamboy’ Laser with a massive 38 points from 12 scores.  Didn’t matter what was going on in a game, he was just ‘there’.  Gotta shout out Thunder Brokkrrs Gilbur Orxbasher, they may not have had a good season, but he was cracking heads no matter what the score was.

JW: He really doesn’t like Orx.

MS: That’s an understatement.

JW: So Mike, we come to the Dean Can Memorial Trophy.  We’ve got the Mega City Eagles vs the Atletico Tronkers, you know what I’m going to ask.

MS: I sure do Jim, I’ll be watching with a pint of cool and full flavoured Asgardian Mead, the best cask ale this side of the Nine Realms.  It hits the spot.

JW: Actually Mike, I was thinking of who would win the trophy.  But now you mention it, I’ll be right there alongside you with an Asgardian Mead when we watch the match LIVE, join us on channel six.

MS: Can you believe we’re contractually obliged to say those things like that, we should read our contracts better, that ‘TalkSport’ clause is a killer for our reps.

JW: Better be careful Mike, don’t want to annoy the sponsors.  So the championship game, who’s your money on?

MS: Tough to call, the teams are evenly matched for the most part, but the Judges have a few tactical nuances up their sleeve they haven’t put to good usage.  I fancy the Atetico Tronkers, but it’s a gut feel, it’s so close to call.

JW: Well we’ll be there and we hope you will to as the Atletico Tronkers face off against the Mega City Eagles in The Dean Cain Memorial Trophy.  It’ll be livestreamed so stay tuned for updates.  I’m Jim Wiezbowski and that was Mike Spunkmeyer, goodnight and remember, drink Asgardian Mead.
